Cole Palmer delivered a sensational performance as Chelsea cruised to a commanding 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday, July 13.
In a dazzling first-half display, the 22-year-old English midfielder netted twice and set up a third for Joao Pedro, helping the Premier League side claim the revamped global tournament’s title in emphatic fashion. French champions PSG, reduced to 10 men late in the game, were left stunned well before halftime.
Chelsea opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after a mistake from PSG fullback Nuno Mendes, whose miscontrol allowed Malo Gusto to pounce. Though Mendes blocked Gusto’s initial shot, the right-back quickly recovered and squared the ball to an unmarked Palmer, who calmly slotted home just inside the left post.
Palmer doubled the Blues’ advantage just after the 30th-minute cooling break with a moment of magic. Picking up a pinpoint pass from Levi Colwill, he cut inside from the right, feinted a pass to deceive the defender, and buried a left-footed strike into the bottom corner.
Before the break, Palmer turned creator. Racing up the right channel, he slipped a perfectly weighted ball through to Joao Pedro. The Brazilian forward timed his run to beat the offside trap and produced an elegant chip over Gianluigi Donnarumma to make it 3-0.
The night went from bad to worse for PSG when midfielder Joao Neves received a straight red card in the 83rd minute for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair during an off-the-ball incident.
Chelsea’s dominant win marks a significant statement under their current project and places Palmer firmly in the spotlight as a rising star on the global stage.
