Amid growing international debate following Russia’s formal recognition of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), Pakistan has made it clear that it will not rush to make a similar decision, emphasizing that any move will be based strictly on its national interests.
According to The Express Tribune, which cited senior government sources, Islamabad is observing regional developments carefully and may consider recognition if a broader consensus among neighboring countries emerges.
A senior Pakistani official was quoted as saying:
“We, of course, will take a decision keeping in view our national interest. I can tell you there is no hurry.”
Although Pakistan has not officially recognized the IEA, its ongoing diplomatic and operational engagement with the current government in Kabul—through trade, border management, and security cooperation—amounts to what many analysts describe as de facto recognition.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan, speaking at a weekly press briefing, declined to comment directly on Russia’s decision, calling it a bilateral matter between two sovereign states. However, he reiterated that Pakistan continues to maintain close ties with Afghan authorities on key issues.
Pakistan’s calculated response comes at a time when regional players are increasingly reassessing their policies toward Afghanistan. Russia’s recognition of the Taliban-led government has sparked new conversations in capitals across Central and South Asia, with some nations considering whether formal recognition could enhance regional stability or increase geopolitical risks.
Observers say Islamabad’s hesitancy also reflects broader concerns, including the security situation along the Durand Line, the treatment of Afghan refugees, and the risk of international backlash should it move unilaterally.
While formal recognition remains off the table for now, Pakistan’s strategy appears rooted in pragmatism and strategic patience, with officials leaving the door open to future alignment if regional consensus builds.
