In comments made during an Oval Office appearance on Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism about resolving ongoing tensions with North Korea, stating, “I’ll get the conflict solved with North Korea.”
Responding to questions about a reported letter he may have sent to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Trump did not confirm or deny the claim. Instead, he emphasized his rapport with Kim: “I’ve had a good relationship with Kim Jong Un and get along with him, really great. So we’ll see what happens.”
He downplayed the likelihood of confrontation, saying, “Somebody’s saying there’s a potential conflict, I think we’ll work it out. If there is, it wouldn’t involve us.”
Earlier this month, NK News, a Seoul-based outlet focused on North Korean affairs, reported that Pyongyang’s representatives at the United Nations in New York had repeatedly declined to accept a letter from Trump intended for Kim.
Trump and Kim met three times between 2018 and 2019 during Trump’s first term, engaging in an unprecedented diplomatic effort that included personal letters, which Trump famously described as “beautiful.” However, talks collapsed over disagreements about denuclearization and sanctions.
Since returning to office, Trump has acknowledged North Korea’s nuclear capabilities. On June 11, the White House signaled openness to reestablishing dialogue with Kim, though it did not confirm the existence of any new correspondence.
