Thousands of demonstrators flooded the streets of Bangkok this weekend, urging Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to step down following the leak of a controversial phone conversation with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen.
The leaked call, which pertained to a recent border dispute, drew widespread backlash after Paetongtarn referred to Hun Sen as “uncle” and appeared to downplay the actions of a Thai military commander, stating he “just wanted to look cool and said things that are not useful.”
Political Fallout and Public Outcry
The fallout from the call has been swift. A key political ally has withdrawn from her ruling coalition, intensifying pressure on the prime minister. Though Paetongtarn issued a public apology, she defended her tone and comments as part of a broader “negotiation strategy.”

Before departing for northern Thailand to inspect flood-affected areas, Paetongtarn addressed the growing demonstrations:
“People have the right to protest, as long as it’s peaceful,” she told reporters.
