TEHRAN — Tens of thousands of mourners filled the streets of Tehran on Saturday to attend the funeral procession of senior Iranian military commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians reportedly killed in recent Israeli airstrikes, according to eyewitnesses.
Chants of “Death to Israel,” “Death to America,” and personal condemnations of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former U.S. President Donald Trump echoed through the capital as coffins were paraded atop large trucks. Many mourners wore black and reached out to touch the caskets as they passed.
The crowd also voiced unwavering loyalty to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, chanting: “Oh noble Leader, we are ready!”
One attendee said, “Trump, may God end your life. You attacked Iran, and we will avenge our martyrs with the destruction of you, Israel, and the United States.”
According to Iranian state media, the funeral honored 60 individuals who were killed in the Israeli attacks. Among the most high-profile figures laid to rest were:
- Hossein Salami, former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and one of Iran’s most influential military leaders.
- Mohammad Bagheri, who previously served as Iran’s Armed Forces Chief of Staff.
- Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the former commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force.
The ceremony marked one of the largest public gatherings in Tehran in recent years, underscoring the scale of national grief and the intensity of anti-Israel and anti-U.S. sentiment following the deadly airstrikes.
