India is reportedly preparing to take a “major step” toward establishing stronger and more structured relations with Afghanistan’s interim government, according to The Hindu newspaper.
The report cites a recent phone conversation between Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Amir Khan Muttaqi, Acting Foreign Minister of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as part of ongoing efforts by New Delhi to re-engage diplomatically with Kabul.
It further notes that the conditions under review were initially presented by Mr. Muttaqi during a meeting with Vikram Misri, India’s Deputy Foreign Minister, on January 8, 2025, in the United Arab Emirates.
While India has not formally recognized the Taliban-led government, Indian officials maintain that fostering dialogue with Kabul is crucial for regional stability and India’s long-term strategic interests.
Analysts believe New Delhi aims to open reliable communication channels that could facilitate security cooperation, humanitarian assistance, and future diplomatic coordination in Afghanistan.
