Kabul, Afghanistan – May 2025:
The Kabul Municipality is set to break ground on a major urban infrastructure project at the highly congested Baraki intersection in Kabul. The initiative includes the construction of both an elevated overpass and an underground vehicle passage, aimed at easing traffic congestion and promoting sustainable urban development.
According to Kabul Municipality’s Directorate of Urban Infrastructure, the design and technical studies for this project have been completed in accordance with international standards. The implementation will commence next week under the supervision of the Department of Works, Maintenance, and Preservation.
Engineer Faiq Ahmad Tasal, Director of Urban Infrastructure, stated that the overpass bridge will stretch 700 meters in length and 20 meters in width, with a height of 5.5 meters and supported by 440 structural pillars. The bridge will connect Deh Afghanan to the Second Parwan Intersection. Meanwhile, the underground vehicle route will extend 470 meters in length, 20 meters in width, and 5.5 meters deep, supported by 525 reinforcement columns, linking Naderia High School to the Traffic Square.
The project is expected to be completed over the course of two years and is anticipated to greatly reduce traffic congestion in the area while also contributing to the city’s modernization and visual appeal.
This vital development marks a major step forward in addressing Kabul’s long-standing traffic challenges, representing a shift toward a more organized, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing urban environment.
