Kabul – Just hours after a U.S.-brokered ceasefire was announced between India and Pakistan following four days of intense clashes in the Kashmir region, reports emerged of fresh violations and renewed attacks. Witnesses and local officials reported explosions and gunfire in several areas of Indian-administered Kashmir, including the cities of Srinagar and Jammu.
According to Reuters, the ceasefire—reached on Saturday after sustained diplomatic efforts by Washington—was intended to halt a dangerous escalation between the nuclear-armed rivals. However, the immediate resurgence of violence has cast serious doubt on the truce’s effectiveness and longevity.
Witness Accounts and Violations
Local residents described scenes of panic as loud blasts and automatic gunfire echoed through populated neighborhoods near the Line of Control (LoC). “We heard two large explosions just after sunset, followed by continuous firing from both sides,” a resident in Jammu told reporters.
Indian military sources accused Pakistan of initiating the latest round of hostilities, while Pakistan’s armed forces issued a counter-statement blaming Indian forces for breaching the ceasefire agreement.
Background of the Conflict
The latest conflict began earlier this week with heavy exchanges of artillery and small-arms fire across the LoC, displacing dozens of families and injuring both civilians and soldiers. Tensions between the two countries have historically centered around the disputed Kashmir region, claimed in full by both nations but administered in parts.
This weekend’s ceasefire was seen as a hopeful sign after a week of violence. The U.S. Department of State confirmed its role in facilitating the agreement and expressed deep concern over reports of renewed clashes. “We are urging both sides to immediately de-escalate and resume diplomatic communications,” a State Department spokesperson said.
International and Regional Response
The United Nations and several neighboring countries have also expressed concern, calling on both India and Pakistan to honor the ceasefire and avoid further military escalation that could endanger regional stability.
Security analysts say that unless both sides commit to sustained dialogue and confidence-building measures, the ceasefire is likely to collapse. “What we are witnessing is a fragile truce, vulnerable to the smallest provocation,” said Dr. Ayaz Malik, a South Asia security expert based in Islamabad.
Future Prospects
With the situation on the ground remaining tense, both countries have reportedly moved reinforcements closer to the border. Schools near the conflict zones have been closed, and security alerts remain high.
