The US Attorney’s Office has announced that an Afghan citizen used forged documents to obtain an immigrant visa in the country.
The agency announced that if the events that occurred are proven, the Afghan citizen could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
This visa, called the “Special Immigrant Visa” or SIV, is specific to areas of Afghanistan that cooperated with the US military.
Megan K. McGuire, the Deputy US Attorney responsible for handling the case, said that the Afghan citizen applied for a special immigrant visa in 2016 and 2021 by submitting fake documents simulating the structure of the US Embassy in Kabul, a fake letter and a fake recommendation.
According to her, the investigation shows that some of the documents she provided were prepared by a fraud network in the US.
Despite using these fake documents, the Afghan citizen managed to obtain a visa in March 2024 and entered the US in April of that year and then received a green card.
The aforementioned case is currently on hold and the final status of the case is expected to be determined within the next week.
