Police confirm driver is in custody after vehicle plows into crowd during cultural event

VANCOUVER, Canada – A tragic incident unfolded in western Canada on Sunday when a driver rammed into a crowd attending a Filipino street festival in Vancouver, killing several people and injuring numerous others, according to local police.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken into custody shortly after the incident. The Vancouver Police Department made the announcement on their official account on X (formerly Twitter).

Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene. One witness reported seeing a black vehicle behaving erratically near the festival site moments before it struck the crowd. “It was swerving and speeding — seconds later, people were screaming and running,” he told local media.

The Vancouver Sun reported that thousands of people were present at the event, which was being held to celebrate Filipino culture and heritage. The full extent of casualties has not yet been released, and police say an investigation is ongoing.

The incident has shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about security measures at public gatherings. Authorities have cordoned off the area as they gather evidence and speak with witnesses.
