Mohammad Agha Hakim, the governor of Panjshir, has reported a notable increase in foreign traders’ interest in investing in and trading emeralds from the province. According to Hakim, foreign traders are now more eager to explore opportunities in Panjshir’s emerald mining sector compared to previous years, signaling a shift toward greater global recognition of Afghan emeralds, particularly those from Panjshir.
The latest bidding event for Panjshir’s emeralds saw active participation from foreign traders, including two traders from India. They not only presented proposals for better extraction methods but also expressed significant interest in investing in the emerald sector. Governor Hakim emphasized the growing potential of Afghan emeralds, saying, “Day by day, it is becoming more promising that Afghan emeralds, particularly those from Panjshir, are gaining more global recognition, attracting more foreign traders than before.”
The recent bidding, organized by the Provincial Mining Oversight Committee, brought together both domestic and international traders. A total of 15,552 carats of emeralds were sold for $328,950. Saifuddin Laton, the spokesperson for the Panjshir governor, revealed that the total sale included 15,550 carats of emeralds, along with five kilograms of sample emeralds.
Local traders and miners in Panjshir are calling for increased opportunities for foreign investment in the province’s emerald mines to further elevate the significance and value of Panjshir emeralds. Mohammad Aman, the manager of one of the emerald mines, noted, “The presence of both national and international traders has increased recently, which benefits the miners. When they come here and see the high-quality emeralds, they show more interest compared to other countries.”
Traders from various nations, including the United States, China, Russia, Germany, India, and Iran, have all demonstrated substantial interest in investing in Panjshir’s emerald mines. However, despite nearly four years having passed since the Islamic Emirate’s return to power, foreign investors have yet to initiate practical mining operations in the province.
The increasing interest from foreign traders indicates a promising future for the emerald mining sector in Panjshir, though challenges remain in translating this interest into tangible investments.
