Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi has embarked on his first official visit to Oman, following an invitation from Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, according to the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ministry spokesman Zia Ahmad Takal stated on Sunday that Muttaqi’s visit to Muscat will focus on strengthening political and economic relations, as well as expanding bilateral cooperation with Oman. The trip includes meetings with senior Omani officials, signaling a push by the Islamic Emirate to deepen its diplomatic engagement in the region.
This visit marks a continuation of Afghanistan’s recent efforts to reestablish its diplomatic footprint abroad. In September 2024, the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the reopening of its embassy in Oman, now operating under the administration of the Islamic Emirate.
Muttaqi’s trip may also serve as a strategic opportunity to attract economic cooperation and political legitimacy from Gulf nations, as Afghanistan looks to overcome isolation and economic challenges since the change in government.
